The experimental design of the study, ETS exposure and timeline of HDM challenges. Timed-pregnant C57BL/6 female mice were exposed to either ETS (daily to 1.0 mg/m3 for 6 h/day) or filtered air throughout the gestation period. Once the dams gave birth, both dams and pups were only exposed to filtered air until weaning. The offspring mice (at 5, 10 and 16 weeks old) were then acutely challenged intranasally with HDM allergen or PBS (6–12 mice per treatment group) over a period of two weeks before being studied at 7, 12 and 18 weeks of age as illustrated and all experiments were performed at least twice
